Bolivia: Protesters Block Roads in El Alto During 48-hour Strike Aug. 14-15

Event

Activists affiliated with Andean Federation of Drivers of El Alto are causing significant traffic disruptions across El Alto as they stage a 48-hour strike in the city Aug. 14-15. Participants are demanding better road conditions and changes to ticket prices for public transport. Protesters plan to block main roads throughout the city on Aug. 14-15, including National Route 3 (Autopista La Paz-El Alto), National Route 1 (Avenida Juan Pablo II), and roads leading to El Alto International Airport (LPB), which serves La Paz.

Significant transport disruptions throughout the city are likely, including along the main roads leading to LPB. The demonstration could also temporarily block transport between El Alto and La Paz. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near protest areas and consider alternative driving routes to circumvent disruptions until the announced demonstration ends and the participants have dispersed.
