Chile and Bolivia Address Border and Security Issues

On Monday, Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren and Bolivian Consul General in Santiago José Pinelo attended the meeting.

The meeting follows the one held between Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve and Bolivian Minister of Government Carlos del Castillo, in the northern city of Iquique in July, when the parties signed an act of commitment to face common challenges.

Issues such as human trafficking, car theft and the control of irregular migration were the focus of the meeting, which had not taken place for many years.

According to the Chilean Foreign Ministry’s communiqué, President Gabriel Boric has met three times with his Bolivian counterpart, Luis Arce, to discuss the need to relaunch a rapprochement agenda.

The two countries, which share a border of some 900 kilometers, have no diplomatic ties since 1978 and relations are at the consular level.
