From United Airlines‘ hub at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, the majority of the carrier’s Latin American operations are conducted. With mainline service to 28 destinations and two seasonal destinations, the airline serves all parts of the region, from Spanish-speaking Caribbean Islands and Mexican destinations to major population centers in South America.
United Express, the carrier’s regional subsidiary, also maintains a strong network of Latin American operations from Houston, including eight different destinations within Mexico. With travel demand to Latin America continuing to grow, United will likely look to add even more routes to this popular region in the near future. In this article, we’ll break down all of United’s routes to this region that you can fly from IAH.
Mexico
United’s network of Mexican destinations served from Houston is immense, with ten different year-round services operated by the carrier. Furthermore, seasonal service is also offered to Monterrey (MTY) during peak travel months. Not only does United serve popular tourist destinations in Mexico, the carrier also serves a variety of inland destinations with nonstop connections to Newark.
United Express’ Latin American operations from Houston are also primarily focused on travel to Mexico. United Express to Mexico operates eight different year-round routes, many of which are to cities in the nation’s north. A seasonal United Express service is also operated to Mazatlan (MZT) on the nation’s Pacific Coast.
Most of these routes are operated by United’s narrowbody Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family jets, with some United Express services operated by Bombardier and Embraer aircraft via the airline’s regional partners. However, United recently announced that it would serve Cancun International Airport (CUN) with Boeing 777-200 airliners from Houston this upcoming winter. Less popular destinations see just one daily frequency, while the busiest receive multiple daily flights.
Central America & the Caribbean
From Houston, United serves eleven different year-round destinations in the Caribbean and Central America, with an additional seasonal service to Havana. These destinations span from resorts on Caribbean Islands and Costa Rica to the cultural centers of multiple non-island nations.
The majority of these flights are operated with narrowbody aircraft, including 737s and A320s. While some destinations in Central America are only served by United from Houston, many high-traffic resort cities are served by multiple of the airline’s hubs.
South America
Crowning United’s operations out of Houston are the carrier’s long-haul services to destinations in South America. These destinations include Bogotá (BOG), Buenos Aires-Ezeiza (EZE), Lima (LIM), Quito (UIO), Rio de Janeiro-Galeao (GIG), Santiago (SCL), and Sao Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU), many of which are only served by United from Houston.
These routes are operated by a variety of different aircraft, with the majority served by long-haul widebody jets. While the aircraft deployed to most destinations are the carrier’s 767, 777, and 787s, flights to Quito and Bogotá feature Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. All of these destinations see once-daily service except for Bogotá, which sees two daily flights.
